Time to bench some folks

I know we are only 17 games into the season but when you got guys not giving their all whether at the plate, on the base pads or in the field, maybe it is time to ride the pine in order to get the message across to them.

Game 10: Braves 9 Rockies 5

The Braves put this one away early with a seven run second inning and going on to win the series opener 9-5. Derek Lowe didn't pitch great, but got enough run support to win his third game in three starts so far this year.

Game 9: Braves 6 Padres 2

For the record, I LOVE the powder blue Braves unis. It reminds me of the 80s Braves, but in a good way. Reminds me of when I first started watching Braves baseball on WTBS and quickly decided that my favorite player was of course, Dale Murphy. I wish they would wear these more often.

Game 8: Braves 6 Padres 1, Nice to see you Troy!

The pitching match up was a good one. The Braves sent out one of their young guns, Tommy Hanson against the guy who the Padres got in the trade for Jake Peavy, Clayton Richard. Richard had a winning record at Petco Park until the Braves got to him in the 6th inning, which ended with Troy Glaus hitting a 417 foot 3-run HR into the upper deck. Tommy Hanson gave up one run as he went 6 complete inning, striking out 7 and issuing 4 walks.

Game 7: Padres 17 Braves 2

Right from the very start of the game, we knew this wasn't going to be good. Jair Jurrjens didn't have it. As each inning progressed, it just got worse until the 4th inning when the Padres blew the game wide open. In the 4th inning, Jurrjens had already thrown 30 pitches before he threw a pitch to Adrian Gonzalez, who hit a ground rule double into LF. By this time, the score was 8-0. Jurrjens was lifted for Jo-Jo Reyes, who had made the team as a reliever.

Chipper injured while rehabbing current injury……ugh!

You just can't make this stuff up! Chipper experienced back spasms yesterday while trying to rehab on his oblique injury by taking some cuts in the indoor batting cages of AT&T Park. I love Chipper, but that guy could get injured by some big raindrops at this point in his career. Glass Chipper said he would like to be in the lineup on Monday against San Diego, but with an off day on Tuesday, Braves hitting coach Terry Pendleton would like to see him wait until Wednesday to give it two extra days of rest. I know Chipper doesn't like to sit on the bench with us losing games, but he really needs to take the time off and get fully healed so this oblique problem does not linger this whole season.

Game 6: Giants 6 Braves 3

Nature brought the rain, but Tim Lincecum brought the thunder down to the Braves hitters last night in the Giants 6-3 victory. The two time defending NL Cy Young award winner was touched up for a two-run homer by Brian McCann in the first, but then proceeded to only give up 4 more hits and strikeout 10 Braves over the next six innings. Jason Heyward hit his second opposite field homer in two days in the 9th, but it wasn't enough to bring the Braves back on this rain soaked day in San Francisco.

Road Trip: 1st Stop San Francisco Giants

Well, the Braves hit the road after playing a 3 game homestand against the Cubs. After playing a night game, the Braves face the task of playing an afternoon game against the Giants. The question has to be asked, what in the world is MLB thinking when they have NL east teams like the Braves play a night game then make them fly out west to play an afternoon game the following day? That is another blog.

Game 2: Braves 3 Cubs 2, Chipper to the rescue!

What a difference a game makes. After POUNDING the Cubs pitching for 16 runs and 12 hits in the season opener on Monday, the Braves offense was lulled to sleep most of the night by Cubs starter Ryan Dempster. Dempster pitched brilliantly against a lineup that only 2 days ago abused Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano. He only gave up 3 hits and 1 run while striking out 9 Braves.

What a difference a year makes!

When you look at the Opening Day Lineup in 2009 and the lineup that we had this year for Opening Day, all you can say is what a difference a year makes. If you think about it, there have been 5 changes in the lineup since last year and all of those changes occurred during the season last year. Let's look at each of these changes.

Game 1: Braves 16 Cubs 5, The Heyward Debut

This is the day that we had been waiting for, Opening Day 2010. Derek Lowe had been named the opening starter. He had a very good ST, allowing only 1 BB after spending the off season wondering if he was going to be traded and wondering what went wrong and working on it.

TT Season Preview Part 1: Starting Rotation

The Braves still have one of the most dominant pitching rotations in all of baseball. Last year they placed third in the majors in ERA. Javier Vazquez may not be on the team any more (part of a trade with the Yankees that brought Melky Cabrera and 2 prospects in return) but they still have 5 dominant starters that can take the mound and keep the Braves in the game.

Spring Training Pitching Stats

I realize that pitchers spring numbers can be quite deceiving because of the smaller amount of innings pitched and also pitching against lesser talent in some cases. Either way stats are always fun to look at, even if they don't really mean anything.

Welcome to Atlanta Jason!

Braves top prospect Jason Heyward was told this morning by Bobby Cox that he had made the opening day roster as an Atlanta Brave. J-Hey will open the season as the Braves starting right fielder. Cox said the decision was easy because Heyward "simply made the team better." I honestly think this is the best thing for J-Hey and the Braves since he is our best option and quite frankly he has earned it this spring. Congrats Jason!! Read the rest of this entry »

Spring Training Hitting Stats

I know its just Spring Training and the stats don't really mean anything, but its always fun to have a look at them and do some speculating.

JJ is OK…..WHEW!

Did you just hear that collective sigh of relief??? That was all of Braves Nation sighing after young ace pitcher Jair Jurrjens MRI came back clean this morning. The MRI showed no damage to the rotator cuff or labrum, only some slight inflammation in his right shoulder. JJ should be a able to resume pitching as soon as next week and should have no problem being ready to make his first start this season.

Reunited and it feels so gooooood….

What a reunion for the Braves and Tommy Glavine! After the way Tommy spoke out against his former team last season about the way he was released I wasn't sure this would ever happen, but it has.

Spring Training Invites

Here is a list of the non-roster invites to the Braves major league spring training camp:

Braves making a run at Damon

Captain Caveman may still end up wearing a Braves jersey after all. Apparently things are starting to heat up again with the Braves and Johnny Damon. The Braves have offered a 1 year deal (with deferd money) and have also asked Chipper Jones to reach out and contact Damon to give him his best sales pitch about why he should come to Atlanta. Hopefully Chipper can get through to Mr Damon and let him know that he is needed. Maybe Chip will invite Johnny out to his ranch for a some fishin'.

New Braves 2010 BP Cap

Some of you probably haven't seen that the Braves will be sporting a new BP hat this season. No red bill this year, but a red outline around the classic white A and some white piping. Looks different, but not bad. What do you guys think? Read the rest of this entry »

Javy Lopez Interview

Ran across this interview with former Braves great Javy Lopez. He talks about a lot of topics ranging from catching, and not catching Greg Maddux, winning the 95 World Series, the next Braves manager, and of course steroids. The steroids part is very confusing to me. He never comes out and says that he took them, but to me he is acting as if he is giving the interview from the point of view of someone that did. What do you think?
