On the Road Again….Struggles

What is it when the Braves leave the friendly confines of Turner Field where they have a winning record of 13-4 and hit the road? Unfortunately, not even I can understand why the Braves are struggling on the road.

6 Game Winning Streak

Yes folks, that is not a misprint. The Braves came home and took care of business. They went 6-0 against the Reds and Padres. Everyone from top to bottom of this order help to get to 6-0 and now they head on the road to Pittsburgh where they face their old friends, Adam LaRoche and Tyler Yates, Friday-Sunday.

Braves busy on an off day

Braves were busy for a team that has an off day. Well, it seems Martin Prado will be spending the next 6 to 8 weeks wearing a cast on the injured hand. It seems he has a grade 1-2 sprain and it will require him to wear a cast. He was officially placed on the 15 DL by the Braves.

Home Sweep Home

The Atlanta Braves are glad to be back at Turner Field, as they completed a three game sweep of the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday, by a score of 14-7, improving to 11-4 at home this year(They are 4-11 on the road.)

Hudson pitches a gem

Just what the Braves needed from Tim Hudson, a pitching gem. He came out and gave one heck of a pitching performance. He threw a complete game for the Braves. Yes, this is the same Tim Hudson who had struggled the last 2 out of the last 3 starts.

Brave’s Slide Continues.

The Braves may be relieved that they won't have to face the Washington Nationals again until July, as the Nationals took a 13 inning affair yesterday, by a 3-2 score, and now have taken 5 of 8 from the Braves this season.

Injury Update

Mike Gonzalez: Gonzalez was originally supposed to come off the DL around the all-star break. Thankfully he has been work extremely hard and is now expected to be ready by mid May. We can only hope that he will not have any major set backs that will keep him out longer.

Didn’t complete the sweep

This loss was tough to take on two levels...Tommy G. went out in the 1st inning with a strain right hammy and we lost another 1 run game. Considering we were down 5-0 going into the 6th inning then we mounted the comeback.

Another Win for the Braves.

After a 91 minute rain delay, the game got under way and it did in a big way for the Braves. It seems our bats have unthawed from the cold of Colorado. With 1 run in, Frenchy steps to the plate with Chipper and Tex on, he takes the Nationals pitcher deep to LF for a 3-Run Blast.

Braves extend Nats losing streak

What a pitching performance by Tim Hudson!!!! The bullpen essentially got the night off, which I think was long over due. Huddy was in and around the plate all night long. He went 8 strong and I mean STRONG innings for us. He had a couple of innings where he threw only 9 pitches so that helped to extend him. The defense behind him came up big on a couple of plays and his catcher, Brian McCann even helped out by throwing out a runner attempting to steal. McCann is now 2 for 2 in throwing out runners at 2B.

HGH Bites the Atlanta Braves

The Braves second best prospect behind Jason Heyward was linked to using HGH. This is just HORRIBLE news for the Braves organization and for fans. I was a huge Jordan Schafer, but now I look at him in a whole different way now. I am still going to stick going to be a Jordan fanatic Major League Baseball in going to suspend the young center fielder for 50 games.

Heartbreaker of a Loss

What a pitching performance by 42 yr old Tommy Glavine. He had it going last night in the Mile High City of Denver. In the thin air, where all hitters can become power hitters, Glavine had all of his pitches working. He was making the best look real bad. Hitting the corners and pitching inside to both the left and right handed hitters. He gave up 1 run over 6 1/3 innings on 3 hits. He struck out 3 while walking 3.

1st Road Trip of the Season-Officially

Taking a side trip to Washington DC to open a new ball park doesn't count as a road trip in my book. After playing the Mets on Sunday, the Braves boarded a plane to fly to Colorado to play a 4 game set with the NL Division Champs, The Rockies. This team shouldn't be taken lightly anymore, with the young guys they have in Hawpe, Tulowitski, Atkins and Holliday to name a few and the cagey vet in Helton, they are going to contend for the NL West Crown.

Two Wins Against the Mets

I thought I would sum up both weekend games in this one post. Except for Friday's rain out which will be made up as part of day/night doubleheader on May 20th. We got another outstanding pitching performance from Tim Hudson. He is finally stepping up to be the ace that we envisioned him to be when we got him from the A's. Finally the bats are coming alive. Chipper had an outstanding game, getting 3 hits in his 1st 3 AB's. Kotsay might not be Andruw Jones in CF but he definitely is alittle bit better at the plate. With KJ out of the lineup, Kotsay was moved to the 2 hole and came through for us. Then magic struck, with the bases loaded and KJ at the plate, pitch hitting for the pitcher, he came through, hitting a grand slam homer to put the Braves out in front for good. The Braves ended up winning 11-5.

Braves win their 1st one

Jair Jurrjens took the mound in his 1st of many appearances as an Atlanta Brave. He looked good on the mound early. He had his change up and fastball working tonight. He broke at least 5 bats with his fastball breaking like it was. I for one was very impressed with Jair's performance. He went 5 1/3 innings, striking out 5 and walking only 1. He allowed 7 hits and 2 runs before he was taken out by Bobby when he got into some trouble in the 6th inning but the bullpen came in and did the job. Got a little shaky but they shut the door and didn't allow any runs.

Braves Lose a Heart Breaker

Tom Glavine made his first start back with the Braves since 2002. He did ok, giving up 7 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, and 3 strikeouts. He ended the game with a 1.80 ERA. The Braves bullpen did ok as well, at least until Manny Acosta came in. Last year, Acosta only gave up two homeruns combined in the minors and in Atlanta. He tied that mark last night, giving up a three run homer, and a solo homer. Tough break for Manny.

Post Game Report-Braves v. Nats

Tough Break for our Braves. Except for the 1st inning, Tim Hudson pitched one heck of a game. He retired 19 straight Nationals. He pitched 7 strong innings, throwing every pitch he has, with good movement. If tonight's start is any indication of what we can expect from Tim Hudson, I can see a Cy Young at the end of season for him.

2008 Season Predictions

Well before the season really starts. I wanted to show everybody my pre-season predictions for the 2008 MLB season. This will show how much I know about baseball or how little I know. Feel free to comment on my predictions and to make your own in the comment box below the article.
AL East
1. Boston Red Sox
2. NY Yankees
3. Tampa Bay Rays
4. Toronto Blue Jays
5. Baltimore Orioles
The Red Sox have too much starting pitching, offense, and one of the best pens in the game. The Yankees are going to put up a good battle, but the Red Sox’s are just flat out better than them. Look out for the Tampa Bay Rays to make some noise in that division.
AL Central
1. Cleveland Indians
2. Detroit Tigers
3. Chicago White Sox
4. Minnesota Twins
5. Kansas City Royals
The Indians have the deepest rotation and pen in baseball. They also have a great 1-2 punch in CC Sabathia and Fausto Carmona. They also have the ability to play small ball and hit homers with their lineup. The Tigers pitching really needs to improve. After Verlander they have a bunch of inconsistent starters. Plus their bullpen doesn't look that good at all. They do have the best offense in baseball.
AL West
1. Anaheim Angels
2. Seattle Mariners
3. Texas Rangers
4. Oakland Atheltics
The addition of Erik Bedard is going to be a major plus for the Mariners. They are one more bat away from being a team that can do some major damage this year. The Angels have a pretty good offense team led by Vladimir Guerrero and Torii Hunter. The key for this team is starting pitching. They might need to go out and get a starter, because of the injury concerns of John Lackey and Kelvim Escobar.
NL East
1. Atlanta Braves
2. NY Mets
3. Philadelphia Phillies
4. Washington Nationals
5. Florida Marlins
This is going to be one of the toughest divisions to pick a winner. I strongly believe that the second place winner in this division will win the NL Wild Card. The team that can stay healthier the longest is most likely going to win. Overall the Braves have the best team from top to bottom. They also have quality backups to replace some players that go down to injury.
NL Central
1. Chicago Cubs
2. Milwaukee Brewers
3. Cincinnati Reds
4. Houston Astros
5. St. Louis Cardinals
6. Pittsburgh Pirates
This is going to be a good battle between the Cubs and Brewers. The Brewers have one of the best offenses in the NL. The Cubs have one of the best rotations and bullpens in the NL. The key for this division is going to be Ben Sheets. If Sheets can stay healthy the Brewers have a great chance at winning the division. I picked the Cubs mainly, because they are a more balanced and more experienced team than the young Brew Crew.
NL West
1. LA Dodgers
2. Colorado Rockies
3. Arizona Diamondbacks
4. San Diego Padres
5. San Francisco Giants
This is basically a tossup to see who is going to win this division. The Dodgers, Rockies, Diamondback or Padres can all win. The Giants have absolutely no offense, but they do have a great rotation. So none of these teams should sleep on them. The Padres have a great 1-2-3 punch in Peavey, Young, and Maddux. If Randy Wolf and Mark Prior can stay healthy, they’re going to be tough to beat. The Diamondbacks have great pitching all around. They are just a bit too young, I don’t think they can do the same thing they did last year and win the division. The Rockies have a great offense and bullpen, but their starting pitching is a bit too inconsistent. The Dodgers are probably the most complete team in this division. With the additions of Joe Torre, Andruw Jones, and Hiroki Kuroda they should be the team to beat in this tough division.

Chop Chatter

According to Fox 5 News in Atlanta, the Atlanta Braves first baseman Scott Thorman has cleared waivers. Thorman is going to be the starting first baseman for the Braves AAA affiliate Richmond this season. This should do wonders for Thorman. He can have another year in Richmond were he can try to fix his whole in his swing. So this probably means that Brayan Pena might be our backup first baseman this year. Bobby Cox can also go with Joe Borchard in that role too. Since the Braves are able to send Borchard to AAA, the best option is probably to keep Pena in Atlanta for now.

The Braves have claimed former Mets utility infielder Ruben Gotay off of waivers this afternoon. The 25-year-old Gotay, who has three years in the majors, played 98 games for the Mets last year, hitting .295 with four homers and 24 RBIs. He played 37 games at second base last year, five at shortstop and two at third base.

Who’s Number 5?

That is the question. Who is the number 5 starter? With Hudson, Glavine, Smoltz, and maybe Hampton going for the first 4 slots, this looks like one strong rotation. Reyes is still a work in progress. Jurrjens needs a little more seasoning, but looks really good. Bennett impressed last year, but can he do it year? I don't like him taking over a spot, but I would not disagree if he was number 5. I think Chuck James could best be suited for the number 5, because he's been pitching in the majors for over 2 years. He has Glavine like qualities of pitching. However, I think we will have a right handed pitcher as our number 5, because Cox likes to have 3 right handers, and 2 left handers.

Yates to the Pirates

Well, it was rumored a good bit. One of the out of option players were being asked in phone calls to GM Frank Wren for trades. Wren bit at an offer from the Pittsburgh Pirates, as he traded reliever Tyler Yates for Pittsburgh minor league right hander, Todd Redmond. This deal gives the Braves more options to play with. One is that Wren has one less Out of option player to choose from. He is likely picking his opening day roster tomorrow, so I wouldn't be surprised to see another deal or two come, since Blaine Boyer and Royce Ring are also out of options. I'd expect Ring to go.

Javy Retires

Can’t say I’m surprised. Javy Lopez has retired. After a weak arm in Spring, the former Braves catcher decided to hang up the cleats. He only hit .180 with 2 homers and 7 RBI’s. Only 6 hits in 22 at bats, so it looks like he might have made the right decision to retire. He really had nothing to play for, and there are others who could do a better job. Smoltz to begin season on DL

It seems John Smoltz will begin the season on the DL. He threw today and didn't experience any soreness but the Braves aren't going to change their plans. This gives Smoltz a chance to throw a sim. game and a minor league game in Rome before coming off the DL on the 6th of April. That date will be a home game against the Mets, on a Sunday, he will be going against Johan Santana, the Mets #1 starter.
