CatchersBlog.com is moving on to bigger and better things.
As I’ve mentioned before a few times already, Catcher’s Blog will transition into the new site before too much longer. I’m not quite ready to reveal the new site just yet, but it won’t be too much longer before I do. As soon as I move to the new site, this domain will redirect everyone over to it. I’m letting everyone know this ahead of time so to prevent too much confusion. This is the reason why I haven’t posted anything lately, even with the slew of news and goings-on in Braves nation.

Braves vs. Brewers 6-25-08
Smoltz no longer a Brave?
I don’t even know how to comprehend this situation. Ever since I remember watching Braves games, Smoltz has been in them, being the true player that he is. Smoltz is probably my all-time favorite player and to see him playing for another team just makes me sad, and of all teams it has to be Boston.

Since this is my first post in 2009, I would like to extend a belated Happy New Year to everyone. I hope everyone has a wonderful 2009.

Prado an everyday player?
FanFest? No, AutographFest.
So, we have more information on this year’s FanFest, only it’s totally different than the past two years have been. It seems the Braves don’t seem to realize that we’re in a recession and no one is spending that much these days. But nonetheless, the ticket information that is given when navigating through the main AutographFest page on the Braves official site is as follows:

Since last week and this week, presumably, will be the slowest two weeks in baseball, let’s try to think of ways to keep reminding ourselves that baseball season is only around the corner—as in almost a month and a half away—even if it is only the day that pitchers and catchers report. But that’s the beginning day for Spring Training for most teams, so we’ll just use that date to keep looking forward to. Between then and now, let’s hope we can wrangle up a starting pitcher, preferably an ace or close to it, and a power-hitting outfielder relatively easily, or just at all.

I have made up another survey for visitors to fill out. It shouldn’t take more than five to seven minutes. Please, if you find the time to fill it out, all feedback on this is appreciated. Thanks.

“To me, this is the Olympics of baseball”
Mac has decided to participate in the World Baseball Classic on the USA team along with Chipper March 5-23. I’m going to miss Mac in Spring Training, but I think Mac usually doesn’t take Spring Training as more than a warm-up for the season anyway. I believe he’s said he doesn’t really care if he does well or not stats-wise.

During the course of this off season, the Braves have gone through plenty of near hits, but those all turned out to be misses within a short time. Sure, we traded for Javier Vazquez and Boone Logan and even signed back-up catcher David Ross. But could you really blame all of the misses on Frank Wren? I don’t think you can. He is just catching the bad end of these situations that seem to keep occuring this dismal off seaon. Take the following in consideration for those of you wanting Frank Wren’s head:

Today is the fourth and final day of the Winter Meetings. Sorry for the lack of updates yesterday, studying for finals and finishing up work before the quarter ends is definitely draining. Nothing has seemed to pan out much for the Braves so far during the Meetings, so maybe today will be the turning point.

Two days down, two to go. If anything is sure to happen during this week, these next two days are probably when it’ll happen. Let’s see what rumors today brings us in Braves Nation.

Day One was filled with the usual rumors and speculation that most teams have swirling around them. Let’s see if today is more eventful on the Braves side with Day Two.

Today the Winter Meetings get underway in Las Vegas. Frank Wren is still looking for a power-hitting outfielder and a top starter, which is hopefully going to be A.J. Burnett. But until he accepts our offer, we still need backups just in case he does not. I’m sure there will be rumors galore throughout the day and until Thursday, so I’ll do my best to keep this post updated about what may pop up about the Braves.

Frank Wren held a chat this afternoon at 3 pm. I sat in on the near hour and a half chat and most of the questions answered were asked by some of the same people early on, which caused some to speculate its authenticity. But, nonetheless, we really didn’t gain any new information from this chat with the man in charge. I asked a question about Fan Fest, but of course, it wasn’t answered. I’m sure there were a good bit of people tuning in, but like I mentioned, most of the early questions were asked by the same people. Nonetheless, it could have been worse.

First, I’d like to mention (and congratulate) our 3-time All Star catcher on his winning the Silver Slugger Award for the second time in his young career. There was a conference call with the man himself, which you can listen to here, in which a few people ask McCann a few questions. DOB from the AJC posted a few quotes from this conference call in this article yesterday. Here are a few quotes from that article:
Meet Some Top Players & Coaches
I’ll concede…for now.
Ok, so I’ll be a nice blogger and send my congrats to the Phillies for winning the World Series and bringing us into the off season earlier than expected. Ok, there (even if it is a week late).

I would just like to say that I started writing this article about two weeks ago, I didn’t want to rush finishing it just to get it posted. I also had other things to worry about than to work on this article, but I finally found time to finish it between working on schoolwork. Also, this article was started before all of the Jake Peavy rumors surfaced, so this article does not mention any of that at all.

There’s a (somewhat) newly written article that was posted on the Braves official site a few weeks ago about Prado possibly becoming an everyday player, with other people, such as Chipper Jones, backing the idea as well. I believe that Prado could possibly be a useful player if he played more, but I’m not sure that he would be as valuable as he currently is if he did play at one position on an everyday basis. While I do favor KJ over Prado, this perception of mine isn’t based on favoritism. This is just my opinion, do with it what you will. Below I will review each of the players’ positives and negatives and compare the two of them with each other.
Hosting Servers to be Upgraded
Somewhere in the early hours of Thursday morning, October 23rd, the host will be upgrading its servers for about an hour at a time. This means that Catcher’s Blog and anything associated with it will not be accessible during that time. I’m not sure exactly when the site will be down, but the e-mail I received said between the hours of 12 am to 6 am of Thursday, the 23rd. This probably won’t effect many visitors, but in case you might happen to try to access the site during those hours on the 23rd and the site is down, then that is why. This is just a heads up for everyone. Everything should be back to normal after the upgrading process is completed.

I’ve been following the Jake Peavy rumors all week since they broke and I haven’t really posted anything about them on here. The main reason is because right now they’re just speculation and who knows what might happen with this situation. Everyone is saying that the Braves are indeed the front runners in this, but who knows what other teams have to offer? I’m sure there will be plenty more of this topic mentioned within the coming weeks, as the trade could be completed with the right offer most anytime now, or so the rumors say.

Last off season, I did a series on the Braves’ roster and what our options at each position were before the season started. This year I’m thinking about doing the same thing, only not quite to the same extent because it took way too long to do last time. I won’t start this probably until January or around there, but there’s a fanpost on TalkingChop about where we stand so far. It’s pretty detailed payroll-wise and it’s sorted pretty well by each facet of the team, so have a look if you wish. It’s a very nice read and a good reference as well.

According to MLBTR, the Braves have mentioned that the payroll will increase in ‘09 and the team will have roughly around $45 million to spend this off season with that amount coming off the books. Most of the money freed up looks to be going toward starting pitching, as it should after this season of injury-ridden pitchers falling off one-by-one. Some names mentioned as possibilities for the rotation next year are as follows: Derek Lowe, A.J. Burnett, Matt Cain, Brad Penny, and Ryan Dempster. All of these are better than the fill-ins we used this past season, but some of those guys could possibly be re-signed to their respective teams. The Braves would also like to try to re-sign Smoltz, Glavine, and Hampton. I don’t see them signing all three, though, unless their contracts were incentive-based or decreased a bit (mainly Hampton for the latter).

I was able to get some Rookie Hazing pictures while at the ballpark on Sunday for the last home game. To view them, please go over to Braves Love, who featured them in one big post. My comments are in that post as well. The rest of my pictures will be up later in my review post whenever I sit down and write it, lol. I’m hoping to do so before school starts Tuesday, so that will be out of the way, but I haven’t done so yet.

MLBTR has posted their 2009 Offseason Outlook on the Braves. While it’s not too in depth, it does cover the basics and the needs we will be looking to fill this off season. It’s kind of like stepping into Frank Wren’s shoes for a moment and looking toward next season’s possibilities.
