Game 51: Braves 9, Phillies 3

First to worst to first. If the season ended today, the Braves would finish their no-post-season drought. But obviously, it won’t, but this does give some real hope toward making a run for Bobby’s last season. This team had an incredible May, let’s see them keep it up. But first, let’s look at how they got there.

Game 50: Braves 5, Pirates 2

A lot has happened in a month. The Braves moved from first place to last, and now they’re trying to make a run at first again. They’re 0.5 games behind the Phillies, who have been shutout in 5 of their past 8 games, who face the Braves on Memorial Day. On Sunday, the Braves were trying to complete a sweep of the Pirates. Let’s see how it went.

Game 24: Braves 10, Astros 1

Wow! Where do we even begin with this one? Congratulations to Timmy Hudson who recorded his 150th win of his career! The Braves completely dominated the game today, leaving me to wonder where the hell this team had been the week before.

Games 23: Braves 4, Astros 2

Finally. Going into this game all I could pray was that the skid would not reach double digits. Tommy Hanson and Jason Heyward shined in what I can only view as the light at the end of a very long, dark tunnel. Maybe perhaps, the worst of the season is now behind us. Let’s just hope we can keep winning… We’ll start with pitching again.

Game 22: Cardinals 10, Braves 4

Tonight marked the end of the worst Braves trip in 61 years. As the skid has moved on to 9 games now I keep asking myself the question, “You can’t lose forever, right?” Where did we go wrong tonight? Let’s start with the pitching.

Game 21: Cardinals 6, Braves 0

This losing streak has got to end some time. 8 games in a row is just too much. I’m sure the Braves are wondering what the hell is happening just as much as we are, but rest assured, relief is coming soon (maybe). Let’s see what happened tonight.

Game 20: Cardinals 5, Braves 4

Everything great has some sort of blemish. America, for example, has the black marks of the Civil War, Japanese internment camps, and Lady Gaga. Likewise, the 2010 Braves have a 7 game losing streak to worry about. Let’s see what went wrong tonight.

Game 19: Cardinals 4, Braves 3

6. The Braves have lost 6 games in a row as they just seem to be unable to buy a break. What’s worse is they had the lead in this one, but it just slipped away. Let’s go. It’s dark at the bottom of the league.

Games 16-18: Mets 9, Braves 3

There’s two reasons why I’m combining the recaps for the Braves’ series against the Mets. One: I’m exhausted as I finish my final year of college. Two: the Braves were just terrible. Let’s go.

Game 15: Phillies 8, Braves 3

Thursday night marked the conclusion of the Braves’ series against the Phillies, and it also marked their second series loss of the season. Let’s go.

Game 14: Phils 2, Braves 0

Some nights, you are just outclassed. That was the case in tonight’s affair between the Braves and Phils.

Game 13: Braves 4, Phillies 3 (F/10)

Wow. I already had this recap written. I was going to talk about how the team’s offense failed them once again and cost them the game. Did I ever get a kick in the pants? The Braves had their best win of the season in extras in incredible fashion and second walk-off win in as many days. Let’s go.

Game 12: Braves 4, Rockies 3

There’s a way to rebound from a no-hitter and there’s a way to rebound from a no-hitter. I’m not sure what this was an example of, but it involved Jason Heyward and a walk-off win. A very good way to bounce back. Let’s go.

Game 11: Rockies 4, Braves 0

There are some memories that stand out in the minds of Braves fans. Some of them are good, some of them are terrible. This game was one of those ‘cover-your-face’ moments, as the Braves got no-hit. Sure, it’s always exciting to see one of these games, but it kind of blows when your team is on the receiving end of it. Let’s go.

Game 10: Braves 9, Padres 5

The Braves are on a winning streak, and that makes me happy. Once again, Friday night kicked off a series against the Rockies that shows that this team has some potential. Let’s go.

Game 9: Braves 6, Padres 2

It’s good to see the Braves win. Much better than seeing them lose. And that’s exactly what they did on Thursday night, earning Hudson his first win of the year.

Game 8: Braves 6, Padres 1

Well, I don’t know what happened on Monday, but the Braves seem to have gotten it out of their system. At first, it seemed like we were going to see the same anemic offense that likes to rear its ugly head, but that just wasn’t the case tonight. The Braves scored when they needed to, and the pitching was phenomenal. Let’s go.

Game 7: Padres 17, Braves 2

There’s some games that I don’t like to write about. There’s some games that I don’t even like to mention. This was one of them. Let’s try to figure out what happened in this train wreck.

Game 6: Giants 6, Braves 3

For Game 5, I said that when it rains, it pours. Well, after the rain stopped in San Francisco yesterday, so did the Braves’ offense. They lost the rubber match against the Giants and their first series of the year. Not an impressive way to start the road trip, bringing their record down to .500 for the first time this season. Let’s see what happened.

Game 5: Braves 7, Giants 2

When it rains, it pours. The Braves scored as many runs in this game as they have in their last 3. This was made possible by timely hitting, sloppy play by the Giants, and Jason Heyward. Let’s hope they can keep it up.

Game 4: Giants 5, Braves 4 (F/13)

Some say that bad calls by umpires are a part of the game. That may be, but that doesn’t mean they have to be. This game was riddled with an inconsistent strike zone and several botched calls, both of which partially contributed to the Braves’ demise. Had the Braves won, would I still be complaining? Probably not, but the fact of the matter is, this is the only sport, other than soccer, where terrible calls are allowed to exist, and I’m getting tired of it. Let’s get on with this train wreck.

Game 3: Cubs 2, Braves 0

All good things must come to an end. Pardon the cliché, but that’s what happened to the Braves as they attempted to sweep the Cubs on Thursday night. For them, this loss meant an end to their longest winning streak of the season, 2. They still managed to win the first series of the year, however, but perhaps what is disappointing about this game is the manner in which they did it. So let’s go.

Game 2: Braves 3, Cubs 2

Well, I had it all figured out. I was going to use this space to complain about the botched double play call that the umpire made in the 5th inning. Then I was going to mention that sometimes umpires make mistakes and it’s part of the game (it shouldn’t be), but really that this is just something that the Braves need to deal with if they want to be a good ball club. Well, fortunately, they did, and it allowed them to continue out of the gate strong with a 2-0 record.

Game 1: Braves 16, Cubs 5

Well, well, well. There are bad ways to start the season and there are good ways. This was a good way.The Braves hammered the Cubs on opening day in a manner that makes me question what I consider to be their weakness.

The wait is over

That’s right, after a long, cold winter, it finally begins today.

Braves take on the Cubs at the Ted in what is to be likely Bobby’s last opening day. Lowe is going up against Carlos Zambrano on ESPN at 4:10 PM today.

Spring Training Starts Today

Wow, what a long winter it has been. But that doesn’t really matter anymore, because spring training is here and it starts today at 1:10 PM EST against the Mets. Coverage will by on SNY, as well as MLB.tv. That is, as long as the weather holds up.

My Thoughts on the Upcoming 2010 Season

I feel obligated to write something, even though the off-season has been relatively quiet recently. Personally, however, my team didn’t make the playoffs and I am getting antsy for some new sports. That is why I think I’ve decided to get MLB.tv for the 2010 season, because I just don’t think I can go another year of only listening to the Braves on the radio. The thought of this has been getting me excited for what’s coming up, so I thought I would just expand on my thoughts for the first time in what seems like a while.

Finally, the blog has been fixed after it broke itself. I’ve put a new theme up, but will probably change it because it seems kind of ‘bleh’ to me.

2009 Draft: Day 1

As the old adage goes, you can never have too much pitching. That is the philosphpy the Braves took into the draft on Tuesday. Holding the 7th overall pick, the highest since the team took Roberto Kelly second overall in 1991, the Braves hoped to select local product Zach Wheeler but he was snatched away by the Giants with the pick before. The Braves selected Vanderbilt lefty Mike Minor with the pick.
Minor profiles as a guy with little upside. He currently projects as a number 4 starter. Minor’s stuff is average, he gets by with pitch ability. His fastball sits anywhere from 86 MPH to 89 MPH. His best pitch is a plus change up.  He has  solid curve and uses a slider for his primary breaking ball. The slider does have good depth on it. His pick off move is probably the best in this year’s draft.  Minor is a low risk, low reward guy. What you see is basically what you get.  The Braves in my opinion would have been better suited  taking a high upside guy here rather than selecting Minor.
The only other pick the Braves had today was the 87th pick. With that pick they turned their attention to the Ivy League and selected Princeton’s David Hale. Hale projects as a power reliever in the pros.  His fastball routinely sits at 92-93 but he can dial it up a notch to 95-96 when he needs to and has topped out at 97. He has flashed a plus slider at times and has shown some feel for a change up. He played two ways at Princeton so having him focus on pitching should help him progress more.
The Braves hold the 7th pick in each round the rest of the way. I expect the Braves to return more towards their roots and start to pick more high school kids with high upsides. A few names to keep an eye on for Wedsnday’s rounds: Austin Adams, Luke Bailey, Colton Cain, Brody Colvin, Matt Grahm, David Nick, Jonathan Singleton, and Zach Von Rosenburg. I will have a write up on the draft when it is complete.

Game 52 – Cubs 3, Braves 2

Well, well, well. I guess I have some explaining to do about the lack of updates on this blog. As I’ve mentioned before, life is busy. I’ve been going through some major changes in my life recently, and honestly, I haven’t had the time or energy to write anything. So, for that, I apologize. I promise, however, that I’ll try to be better about it in the future. This means recaps for the following games, and maybe old recaps for the ones I missed. It really depends how my schedule works out. Bear with me, though, I promise you no long hiatuses like this anymore.
