Spring Training Pitching Stats

I realize that pitchers spring numbers can be quite deceiving because of the smaller amount of innings pitched and also pitching against lesser talent in some cases. Either way stats are always fun to look at, even if they don't really mean anything.

Other pitching possibilities redux

Okay, the Braves are going to carry seven relievers. (Why? Because, that’s why. But Bobby only really used four relievers last year anyway. Shut up!) Anyway, we know who five of them will be, barring injury: Wagner, Saito, Moylan, O’Flaherty, and Medlen. It sure looks like the secondary, or tertiary if you count Wagner, lefty will be Joseph Albert Reyes. Jo-Jo has looked good in spring training, and more importantly in about 42 innings worth of work against lefties in the majors has allowed them to hit .210 while striking out two and a half for every walk and just about one per inning. I think he has the talent for more, but I also think he can thrive in that role.

Welcome to Atlanta Jason!

Braves top prospect Jason Heyward was told this morning by Bobby Cox that he had made the opening day roster as an Atlanta Brave. J-Hey will open the season as the Braves starting right fielder. Cox said the decision was easy because Heyward "simply made the team better." I honestly think this is the best thing for J-Hey and the Braves since he is our best option and quite frankly he has earned it this spring. Congrats Jason!! Read the rest of this entry »

Rambling, dumb predictions

You’re supposed to make predictions, I guess. I really have no idea what’s going to happen, and neither does anyone else.

Other pitching possibilities

This is always a tough bit, and I’m sure I’ll miss somebody. Anyway, the best-known reliever I haven’t covered yet is certainly Scott Proctor, who had two good years of bullpen workhorse work with the Yankees and Dodgers (traded for Wilson Betemit!) after two years Jeff Dedmon wouldn’t sign for, and who went down with an arm injury and missed most of 2008 and all of 2009. He had Tommy John surgery in May, and I wouldn’t expect him to be ready to start the season, though the Braves are optimistic. I also am a bit dubious that he’s a good fit for the type of bullpen Bobby is running, which is based upon short outings. He’s not a shutdown guy, he’s a former starter who is useful for a couple of innings to keep a game under control.

Interlude: Bobby’s bullpen management

I’ve gone through the bullpen mainstays, and I’m really not up to tackling Manny Acosta right now. So let’s talk bullpen management. Last year (this stat is from the Bill James Handbook) Bobby was the manager most likely to use a pitcher on consecutive days. I think we all knew that, instinctively, but it’s been confirmed.

Spring Training Starts Today

Wow, what a long winter it has been. But that doesn’t really matter anymore, because spring training is here and it starts today at 1:10 PM EST against the Mets. Coverage will by on SNY, as well as MLB.tv. That is, as long as the weather holds up.
