Good riddance: a postmortem for the 2008 Atlanta Braves (Part II: The Good)

There were three players who were unquestionably good hitters on the 2008 Atlanta Braves. You can live with that, with enough ordinary hitters, but the Braves didn’t have enough of that, plus their three good hitters were:

$45MM to Spend?

According to MLBTR, the Braves have mentioned that the payroll will increase in ‘09 and the team will have roughly around $45 million to spend this off season with that amount coming off the books. Most of the money freed up looks to be going toward starting pitching, as it should after this season of injury-ridden pitchers falling off one-by-one. Some names mentioned as possibilities for the rotation next year are as follows: Derek Lowe, A.J. Burnett, Matt Cain, Brad Penny, and Ryan Dempster. All of these are better than the fill-ins we used this past season, but some of those guys could possibly be re-signed to their respective teams. The Braves would also like to try to re-sign Smoltz, Glavine, and Hampton. I don’t see them signing all three, though, unless their contracts were incentive-based or decreased a bit (mainly Hampton for the latter).

Good riddance: A postmortem for the 2008 Atlanta Braves (Part I: Manager and Coaches)

To be honest, a postmortem was indicated when Hudson went down and the team officially died; the corpse is starting to smell.

Chipper wins Batting Title

One of the few bright spots for the Braves this season has been the play of Chipper Jones. Chipper completed the year with a batting average of .364. Which was good enough for him to win his first Batting Title. He beat out Albert Pujols, who hit .357.

With the Postseason Coming Up-What’s Next for the Launching Pad?

JB in Atlanta. Today I’m enjoying this brew and wondering if I’ll be able to put gas in my car. We’ve got first time “V” Rays. Curses broken (Red Sox) and Curses to be broken (Cubs). Read the rest of this entry »

Game 162

It seems like it was just yesterday that the Braves were playing the Nationals in March 30th. Full of hope for the season, hoping to reclaim the NL East throne. But today, the season came to an end much too early than expected when it began.

Season over, finally, game thread: Sept. 28, Braves at Astros

This is the fifth year in a row that the Braves’ season has ended against Houston. Personally, I am sick of it, and the stupid train, and the ridiculous left field wall. Blech.

Game 161

Remember what I said about this team yesterday? Unpredictable. They win, they lose, they score a ton of runs, they score none. I don’t get it. I don’t think I’ll ever it get it. All that matters is the Braves put a beat-down on the Astros and get to close out their season tomorrow.

Game 160

I think it became evident early on in the season that this team would be hard to define and understand. They can suck for a large part of the season, then, seemingly out of nowhere, take two of three against teams that have given them trouble in the past in heroic fashion, and then go back to sucking so hard again. Last night was one in the last category.

Is Chipper a Faker?

Phillies, don’t pop the corks just yet. Ok, so it looks like after outing my Braves, they decided to win the series with the Phillies. Perhaps to avoid more suspicion? They finished the year playing the Phillies better in Citizen’s Bank Park than they did in Atlanta. Go figure. They still only got three wins against [...] Read the rest of this entry »

Rookie Hazing 2008

I was able to get some Rookie Hazing pictures while at the ballpark on Sunday for the last home game. To view them, please go over to Braves Love, who featured them in one big post. My comments are in that post as well. The rest of my pictures will be up later in my review post whenever I sit down and write it, lol. I’m hoping to do so before school starts Tuesday, so that will be out of the way, but I haven’t done so yet.

Game 159

It took virtually the entire season, but it looks like we finally figured out how to beat the phils, get lots of hits, score lots of run, pull Jojo early.

Game 158

Sorry for the lateness of this recap, things have been mad around here. But, the Braves tried to put a crimp in the phil play off hopes, much like they did the mets. Time will tell if they were successful.

Yet another random thought game thread: Sept. 24, Braves at Phillies

If the Phillies win the World Series, Phillies fans will still boo them next year the first time they lose two games in a row. And I’m all right with that.

Another random thought game thread: Sept. 23, Braves at Phillies

I have two tomato plants. One has grape tomatoes and the bees love it and and I have lots of grape tomatoes. The other is supposed to have regular tomatoes but the bees won’t touch it. They’re right next to each other. I blame the neighbors.

Game 157

The season is rapidly wrapping up, which should lead to a bit more free time for me. Less games to watch, but I have gotten out of the habit and I get a respite from writing the recaps. I was rather hoping the Braves would put something together in the closing days, but I am beginning to lose that optimism.

Phillies/Braves Conspiracy Leaked

~JB, Atlanta, GA Sources have confirmed this week that a secret agreement was indeed forged between the two teams at the start of 2008. The underground alliance was supposed to go undetected all year but an unforeseen security leak led to an investigation that uncovered ellaborate details of a Philadelpia/Atlanta consipiracy. The plan had the Braves [...] Read the rest of this entry »

Random thought game thread: Sept. 22, Braves at Phillies

“Tourette” would be a good name for one of those dogs that barks for no reason.

Again…You’re Welcome, Phils

The Braves played the last home game of 2008 this weekend and I must say, in spite of a disaster of a season, in spite of being swept at home this year by the Phils, in spite of all the frustrating crap that’s happened all year long… yesterday’s win made me feel good. We came behind, [...] Read the rest of this entry »

Game 156

It seems the only team we can beat on a regular basis is the mets. That is good when we play the mets, not so got when we play any other team. Well, taking two of three from them this close to the end of the season is nice.
