The 40 Year Old Surgeon
As with any quadragenarian, a watchful eye must be kept on that which they call “stuff.” By stuff, they mean the effectiveness of the pitches in a pitcher’s repertoire. We only saw 5 innings of John Smoltz on Sunday, and from my seat in section 126 near the left foul pole, he certainly looked great, but perhaps a closer look should be taken to see if Smoltz’ stuff is what it was last year, when he was among the league’s best pitchers. We’ll do that with the Pitch f/x system, which uses two cameras to trace every single pitch’s movement and speed from the pitcher’s hand to the plate. 2008 is the first year which sees every single stadium equipped with Pitch f/x equipment, and it’s a scouting dream. Let’s get right to it, shall we?

Braves playing like the Braves from the Braves era
Much like the last few years, the Braves beat good teams and lose to god awful teams like the Nats and Bucs. It's only one week into the season but there have been some memorable plays already. I nominate the 15 seconds of Resop in LF as the most memorable so far. I felt like I was back in Little League watching players switch gloves in the middle of an inning.Read the rest of this entry »
Game 6
I must be a masochist for liking this kind of game, but we got to see a little “classic” Braves Baseball today, the kind where you are nervous right up to the very end. This game was a throw back to the 90’s where it was pitching that got the job done and the bats did just enough. If we start getting on the right side of these type of games, for a change, it will be a long season for the rest of the NL East.

Here’s just some thoughts about Week 1 of the regular season for the Braves.
Any more questions about Escobar?

Today is the first time we see Johan Santana this year and I’m sure it won’t be the last. With Smoltz going against him, if he is the Smoltz of old, we can expect a good outing. As Smoltz has said before, he knows his body more than anyone, so if he says he can go, let him go for it; he hasn’t proven he’s going down hill yet. If we bring the offense that was obviously apparent yesterday, along with timely hitting, we should pull out a win. Sure, we’ve only seen Santana once in the last few years, but he is beatable. We already almost beat him last year, except for Wickman blowing the game. Now that he won’t be doing that, let’s hope the bullpen doesn’t follow in his path in doing so. Should be a great match up and great game. I’ll be watching on TV, but my sister is going with a few of her friends, so I might be able to get a few pictures out of her if she takes them. More often than not, she takes them of herself and her friends more so than the players, etc., but you never know. The game comes on at 1:30 pm on SportSouth. I’m guessing they’ll do a Braves Live? I’m not quite sure on that one, though.

Win, or the heat death of the universe commences.
Game 5
Ah, rivalry games. There’s nothing better than beating your rival. And, in this case, there’s nothing better than when the Braves beat the Mets.

Desperately important game thread: Mets at Braves, April 5
Seriously, whoever loses this game should just start trading away everything and hope for a good draft to maybe compete in 2012.

Absolutely vital game thread: Mets at Braves, April 4
Obviously, this is a virtual elimination game. Whoever loses should probably start a fire sale, and the winner will be allowed to print playoff tickets.

The Braves open an early and important series with the Mets tonight and are looking to bounce back from a rough 1-3 start with the losses coming against the Nationals and Pirates (that is just painful to type).Read the rest of this entry »

Ten years of this?Oh my God. I’m wasting my life! Game 4This game started out really bad, but let’s be honest, not really a surprise. As soon as I turned the game on, it was being announced that Hampton was a late scratch, the announcers didn’t know why. Bennett was being called in to make the emergency start. Of course, this would be the third day in a row he pitched. The pen, which has already carried far too big a load was surely going to be called on, again. The Braves rose to the challenge and made a game out of it, but fell a bit short in the end. This is getting to be a broken record, but, once again, if it weren’t for an error… Read the rest of this entry »Mike Hampton scratchedUpdate: Word from Sports South is that it is a strained pectoral muscle Mike Hampton has been scratched from his start tonight due to an uncomfortable warm-up. Jeff Bennett will start the game. Read the rest of this entry »Game Thread: Pirates at Braves, Apr. 3First off, I’m writing a paper and was hoping someone out there can help me.
