Game 10

The Braves (finally) won one. “Half” the team showed up. The “half” I am referring to is of course, the pitching. Huddy certainly had his “A” game going, and Moylan was more than up to replacing the ailing Soriano. The bats still haven’t come around yet, but at least showed signs of life.

Didn’t we just play these guys?

Let’s Avoid A Sweep

I have to make this post short because I have a test next class and I need to look over my study guide. I won’t be out of class until 2:00 pm, so this is probably the only chance I’ll have to post this.

The Chop Town Blues

Bad news Braves fans, I, like I’m sure you as well, have a dreaded case of the Chop Town Blues. And boy, do we got it bad.

Game 8

I try to keep these recaps positive, I really do. I try to focus on the good things the Braves do rather than the negative. But, these last three games have really made that difficult, with this game the hardest of the three. Every time the Braves managed to chip away at the lead, the Rockies answered back with twice the number of runs, at least.

Stuff like this bothers me

In ESPN's pregame writeup of the Yankees-Royals game (Ian Kennedy was a last-minute scratch), they were talking about the various Yankee injuries, including Jorge Posada's shoulder that forces backup Jose Molina into action. In that writeup, Joe Girardi said something entirely unnecessary and probably false:

HGH Bites the Atlanta Braves

The Braves second best prospect behind Jason Heyward was linked to using HGH. This is just HORRIBLE news for the Braves organization and for fans. I was a huge Jordan Schafer, but now I look at him in a whole different way now. I am still going to stick going to be a Jordan fanatic Major League Baseball in going to suspend the young center fielder for 50 games.

Frenchy’s New Site

Well, it’s not really new, but Frenchy’s official site has a new look to it than it did last year and I believe it runs better. During the off season it was down, and I’m assuming that’s because it was being redone. The overall look of the site flows really well, in my opinion. The layout is a lot better than the previous one and is more functional for visitors. Frenchy even has his own blog on his official site, but it doesn’t allow you to comment on it like the Delta blog that he posts on, because Delta is running on WordPress and the blog on Frenchy’s site is run by something else. Personally, I think he would get more feedback and interaction by having comments on his official blog, but that’s just me. Maybe he’ll have that feature added sooner or later.

Avenging Southworth

If the Braves are 21 games over .500 at any point this year, the franchise will have achieved a milestone: it will have a .500 record over the course of history, the first time it would be true since June 3, 1923, with the 17-25 Braves charting their usual course in doom. This would be a stunning turnaround for a franchise that hasn't seen much glory outside our lifetimes.

Game 8

Back in the Braves heyday it was said the Braves had “great pitching and just enough offense.” Now, I think it should be said the Braves have “good pitching and almost enough offense.” Today the Braves fell to 3 and 5, with all five of their losses by one run. I’m afraid that’s just not getting it done.

Braves Bats Go Cold

Last night’s historic game in Coors Field was also a major downer with a 2-1 loss. Not only did we get quality pitching yet again from our starter in Tom Glavine, and I know it was freezing the entire time, but there was only three hits and those were spread out through nine innings. It wasn’t like it was the first time we were facing Aaron Cook and we usually hit him pretty well. We hit better against Johan Santana on Sunday than yesterday. But enough griping, it’s not going to change the outcome unfortunately.

Hey

Glad to be part of the coup, everybody. From what I understand, my job here is to go all historically nerdy with Braves stuff, which I hope to do with aplomb. I'm all right with stats (I managed to sneak some statistical analyses through to Baseball Prospectus - smoke and mirrors, all), but I have more fun with the history of the game, so the PECOTA you'll hear about is less the BP projection system as it is Bill the utility player of glory. My best friend being an obsessive Braves fan should also help out. (You know you've got a good friend when you can give them an autographed Rafael Belliard card for birthday and they like it...)

Heartbreaker of a Loss

What a pitching performance by 42 yr old Tommy Glavine. He had it going last night in the Mile High City of Denver. In the thin air, where all hitters can become power hitters, Glavine had all of his pitches working. He was making the best look real bad. Hitting the corners and pitching inside to both the left and right handed hitters. He gave up 1 run over 6 1/3 innings on 3 hits. He struck out 3 while walking 3.

History of the Braves: Hank Aaron

Today is one those days that should be remembered for all time in baseball. On April 8, 1974, Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth’s home run record for a career with his 715th. As a tribute, I write the second part of the History of the Braves series honoring one the most important baseball players in history. Last September, his record was broken by Barry Bonds, but we’ll always remember Aaron as “Hammerin’ Hank”.

Game 7

I think its pretty clear who the “hard luck” pitcher of the staff is going to be this season.  Glavine is sporting a cool 0.79 era in his first two starts and what does he have to show for it?  NOTHING.  The pen has blown both of them.

I still hate Coors Field. Humidor or no.

When I said that Hall and Oates were the worst video band of all time, it was before I’d seen this. Good God.
